Dental emergency is used to describe a situation involving teeth and surrounding tissues that is considered of high importance to be treated by an expert or professional. Dental emergencies do not necessarily involve pain, although this could be a sign that something needs immediate attention. Various emergencies exist and each of them requires individual and unique treatment depending on the extent of the problem.

The definition of dental emergency also depends on the patient’s need for any emergency dental treatment as some individuals do not have the willingness to get treatment right away, in contrary to some who feel that they need immediate attention and cure.

What are the common dental emergencies?

  • Pulpitis or the infection of the pulp or nerve of the tooth
  • Gum abscesses or collection of pus caused by infection
  • Swelling and bleeding
  • Broken or missing tooth
  • Pain on biting
  • Pericoronitis or inflammation around an erupting wisdom tooth
  • Trauma on tooth due to accident

When you experience dental emergencies, here are some recommended tips:

  • If you have a knocked out permanent tooth, you have to keep it moist at all times. You can try placing it back in the socket without having to touch the roots, or place it between tooth and gums and then go to your dentist right away
  • If you have a cracked tooth, rinse your mouth immediately with warm water to keep the area clean. You can also put on cold compress on your face to keep it from swelling or at least minimize swelling
  • If you happen to bite your lip or tongue, apply cold compress and clean the area with water
  • If you experience toothache, rinse your mouth with water to clean it out and you may gently use floss to remove any food stuck in between. Do not use aspirin or painkiller against the gums near the aching tooth as it will burn your gum tissue.
  • Same as for any object stuck in the mouth, make sure to use floss instead of any sharp or pointed instruments
  • As a temporary measure for lost filling, you can stick a piece of sugarless gum into the cavity and see you dentist right away
  • If you have lost your crown or if it falls off, it is imperative that you see your dentist right away but if it is not possible, use a cotton swab to apply little cove oil on the sensitive area
  • If you happen to have braces and the wire breaks or sticks out of a bracket or band and is poking your cheek, try using an eraser of a pencil to push it back to a more comfortable position. Do not cut the wire and get to your orthodontist’s office as soon as you can
  • If you discover a pimple-like swelling in your gum that is normally painful, that could be an abscess. Abscess is an infection that occurs around the teeth or in the spaces between teeth and gums. Since this infection can easily spread to the other parts of your body if left untreated, it is recommended to see your dentist immediately.

There are professionals who are specifically trained for specific areas to be able to provide the required treatment and care, and in the dental emergencies mentioned, the dentists who provide immediate care and attention for patients who need their conditions treated with urgency are called emergency dentists. However, depending on the dental condition, not all dentists can provide aid to all dental problems their patients bring them. There are some cases that may need the expertise of a other specialists.

Whatever the case maybe, it is always imperative to know the situations and the kinds of injuries that require emergency dental care. Some oral injuries and problems need really fast and urgent attention while others can wait until the next dental visit during the dentist’s normal business hours. But there are emergency hotline numbers or instructions you can follow on the answering machine if you are not able to reach your dentist. If none of these options work, you can always go to the nearest local emergency clinic or emergency room so that the staff will be able to determine the level of urgency needed for your situation or if there is any medicine they can apply to temporarily alleviate the pain or symptoms.
